The modified virial theorem of Rose (1979) is applied to the Klemola 30 and Phoenix compact groups of galaxies in order to derive the overall group M/L ratios. Spectroscopic data for the two groups are presented which are of sufficient accuracy to determine properly the group velocity dispersions, and magnitude data for the individual group members are discussed. The M/L ratios are found to be 4 for the Phoenix group and 24 for the Klemola 30 group. These results are shown to be strongly model-dependent and in apparent conflict with many previous determinations of M/L ratios for small groups of galaxies.
