Recent IR, X-ray and radio telescopy images have indicated unanticipated degrees of Galactic complexity, prominently including a spongelike structure of 500 light-years-wide bubbles that float in the galactic gas, as well as hundreds of 300-light-year-long 'worms', or wriggling columns of hot gases that project from the galactic disk. The worms are suggested to form when large bubbles of hot gas burst out of the galaxy. It is speculated that even a massive supernova could not furnish enough power to generate one of these structures.
