New MK spectral classifications (30 stars) and UBV photoelectric photometry (27 stars) are presented for stars in the central region of the rich young cluster NGC 6231, which is the nucleus of the association I Sco. A distance modulus of 11.6 is derived by comparison with the main sequences of II Sco, the Alpha Persei cluster, and the Hyades, assuming a distance modulus of 3.3 for the Hyades.
