Measurements of the 2-cm H2CO line are presented along with selected 2.6-mm CO spectra toward 16 major molecular clouds. Maps of the 2-cm line cover approximately 10 arcmin in Orion A, Sgr A, and W 33. The emission (CO) and absorption (H2CO) lines from those regions associated with continuum sources are analyzed to discriminate between alternative pictures of gas dynamics in molecular clouds. Significant differences found between the mean emission and absorption velocities require that the motions be either coherently organized on a scale comparable with the cloud size (i.e., collapse or expansion) or macroturbulent. The full line widths cannot be explained by microturbulence. Although microturbulence may still exist on a smaller scale, the shortened damping times become increasingly restrictive.
