Successful habitation of the Earth in the future depends on developing a proper understanding of the Earth and its atmosphere. Space science will play a fundamental role in achieving such understanding yet, despite the sophistication of the media, scientific literacy has scarcely begun to diffuse into the public at large, as demonstrated in this paper by some examples drawn from astronomy and the space sciences.
