1H0253+193 is a hard X-ray source, situated by chance directly behind a dense nearby molecular cloud, MBM~12 (Lynds 1457). 1H0253+193 exhibits sharp, apparently complete, eclipses, lasting 1990~s and occuring every 21,800~s. These properties make this an ideal source for studying the size and chemical composition of interstellar grains via the temporal behavior of the X-ray flux resulting from dust scattering effects during the eclipse.
