Under very general theoretical assumptions, the evolution of the space density of clusters of galaxies is extremely sensitive to cosmological parameters. The most straightforward method of exploiting this sensitivity is through measurements of the X-ray temperature function. The present fractional uncertainty on the density parameter using this approach is about 30% based on a sample of clusters with redshifts less than 0.4. We propose to obtain the temperatures of a complete sample of clusters with a median redshift of greater than 0.7. These observations will determine the density parameter substantially more precisely because of the increased leverage of the higher redshift.
