We propose to obtain deep ACIS-S-BI CCD data of the X-ray bright elliptical galaxy NGC 5044 which also exhibits extensive optical emission-line filaments and dust patches. These data will not only significantly improve on the morphological study of the X-ray emission of elliptical galaxies at higher spatial resolution than that available to date, but will also allow a study of the spectral characteristics of the X-ray emission on very small and interesting scales, which will allow us for the first time to study the physical nature of the connection between the different phases of the interstellar medium of elliptical galaxies.
