We will observe the supergiant X-ray binary 4U 1700-37 for 40-50% of its orbit, from its normal bright state through the pre-eclipse absorption state, and into eclipse. We will map the accreting wind from the variable absorption column and absorption edges. We expect to see a rich line spectrum including fluorescent and recombination lines. We will investigate the response of these lines and the absorption to X-ray flares. By mapping the gas jet from the companion and the stellar wind, we can determine the accretion rate from the both the spherical wind and from Roche lobe overflow.
