Electron Injection, Acceleration, Shock, Supernova Remnant

It is well known both from theory and from observations that the spectrum of accelerated particles has power-law shape on relativistic energies. It is an opened question however how does this spectrum behave at nonrelativistic energies. To know the parameter important for applications, namely the normalisation of the power-law part of the spectrum, it is necessary to know the whole spectrum of accelerated particles. This problem is closely related to the problem of injection, i.e determination of the distribution of particles which are able to be involved into the acceleration process. The extension of the individual particle approach of Bell (1978) to the problem of injection and acceleration of electron component of cosmic rays on the nonrelativistic shocks is proposed. The basic idea is the direct relation between the injection and thermalisation of particles on the shocks. This approach has been applied to the electron injection and acceleration on the shocks of supernova remnants.
