The SWICS (Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer) instrument on board the Ulysses spacecraft is a true mass (not mass per charge) spectrometer, flown for the first time in the solar wind. The sensor's working principles and capabilities are reviewed, and the different data types obtained and how they are routinely analyzed are discussed. Distribution functions of 9 minor ion charge states are presented and compared for two periods with very low and high solar wind kinetic temperature. Daily averages of solar wind abundance ratios of C/O and Mg/O from switch-on in late 1990 up to mid 1992, that is, mainly during Ulysses' journey to Jupiter, near the ecliptic plane, are presented. The composition data is discussed in the framework of the FIP (First Ionization Potential) fractionation effect.
