The concept of the 'flat solar corona' is pursued. The point is that during the greater part of the sunspot cycle, the solar corona in the three dimensional space is generally as flat as in the solar minimum. Diversity of coronal forms is mainly due to changing orientation of the corona towards the observer. The most interesting is a situation when the flat corona is steeply inclined against the solar equator. With such a tilt, the corona can be at times oriented almost normally to the line of sight, that is, it can lie close to the plane of the sky. Such an orientation yields a good opportunity to observe the corona from the magnetic pole side. This is equivalent to observations of the heliospheric current sheet 'from above'. The possibilities of using the above situations for detailed optical studies of the outer solar corona are discussed in the context of the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) mission.
