The relations between period ratios of Cepheid-type variables and astrophysical opacities are studied. It is argued that observed period ratios can be used as sensitive tests of the chosen opacity representation. The sensitivity of the period ratio to opacity changes is investigated by calculating kappa-effect-functions for four typical models of double mode variables covering RR Lyrae stars, classical Cepheids, anomalous Cepheids, and Delta Scuti variables.
