New spectroscopic data on the interacting galaxies NGC 4782/3 are presented. H-alpha and forbidden-line N II emission is found near the center of NGC 4782. The extended region of optical line emission exhibits a slight eastward asymmetry and appears to be slightly elongated in the direction of the radio jet. A broad component of underlying H-alpha emission is present in the center of the emission-line region. The peculiar kinematics of the emission-line gas is determined from the strongest emission line, forbidden N II 6584. It is noted that, if these physical properties are physically connected, an encounter scenario must be found that explains all of them at the same time; the hypothesis of massive dark haloes surrounding the two galaxies ia adduced.
