Models of gaseous self-gravitating spheres photoionized and in pressure equilibrium, bounded by an external pressure, are computed. The photoionizing flux is assumed to be external and is attenuated by the outer layers of the cloud. The models reproduce the overall shape of the observed H I column density distribution between N(H I) = 10 exp 16 and 6 x 10 exp 20/sq cm. The flattening of the column density distribution at N(H I) = 2 x 10 exp 20/sq cm is well reproduced and is due to the sharp decrease in the column density when hydrogen recombines.
