The mission scenarios of the VEGA I and VEGA 2 spacecraft, two explorer spacecraft which will investigate the Venusian atmosphere following a flyby of comet Halley in 1985, are reviewed. Emphasis is given to the French contribution to the VEGA scientific payload. Detailed descriptions of the mass-spectrometer and meteorological instruments on board VEGA 1 and 2 are presented.
