A review of the Martian environment is presented. The solid surface of Mars which is dark brown and covered with craters is described; wide spread flooding and polar caps are observed. The atmosphere of Mars which is thin, contains little oxygen, and experiences frequent dust storms is studied; the atmospheric environment of Mars is not suitable for vegetation or life development. Comparative planetology which will assist man in understanding why the earth is habitable and what maintains the habitable environment is discussed.
