The present state of knowledge of comets is reviewed, and the scientific response to the return of Halley's comet is discussed. The origin of the comets is considered, and the mechanisms involved in injecting comets into the solar system from the Oort cloud are addressed. The structure and composition of comets are described, and the nature of cometary tails is examined. The probes being sent to Halley's comet are reviewed, and the factors determining the visibility of the comet from earth are discussed.
