Profiles of the Hα and [N II] emission lines have been obtained along two lines, of unprecedented extent, over the face of the dusty, H II and molecular complex of M17. Also an [S II] Schmidt photograph has been digitally processed to reveal clearly the features in the nebulosity which have a low degree of ionization. Several velocity components are found to be continuous over large areas of M17. Two of these at VHEL ≅ 20 km s-1 and 9 km s-1 are closely associated with the extensive components in the molecular clouds. Over the bright nebular core the third component changes systematically to more negative velocities (from VHEL ≅ 0 to -40 km s-1) over a distance of a few parsecs. The approaching side of a radially expanding shell is suggested. At the position exhibiting the highest negative radial velocity of this shell, a collimated stream of ionized material is emerging. There is no evidence in this data that the outer, faint, filamentary structure is in a state of radial expansion. All of these motions are considered in the light of current theories.
