Calculations are performed to predict the properties of observable
infrared H I and H2 lines emitted by (1) the gas in protoclusters of
galaxies before the earliest stars and galaxies have formed, or (2) the
giant H II regions that would be excited by the star population in
individual primordial galaxies.
