We present preliminary observations of low amplitude radial velocity monitoring of solar type stars in the open cluster NGC752 utilizing the Hydra multi-fiber and Bench Spectrograph on the WIYN telescope. The multiplex capability of Hydra allows the observation of the stellar velocities in a relative fashion rather than absolute. The velocity zero point is easily derived through an ensemble average of the stars that appear to be constant in velocity. The technique is currently delivering a velocity precision of at least 100 meters per second and can likely be refined to further enhance the precision.
The goal of the project is to detect the higher amplitude extra-solar planetary systems that might reside in the cluster. An additional benefit of the survey will be the possible detection of brown dwarf binary candidates and a study of the oscillation modes of mid-type F stars that lie on the red edge of the instability strip.
The extension of this project to other clusters currently underway will yield valuable information regarding the presence of large amplitude extra-solar planetary systems; brown dwarf binary companions; and delta Scuti stellar oscillations as a function of cluster age and metallicity.
