High resolution interference filter photographs are presented of the supernova remnant (SNR) VRO 42.05.01 (G166.0 + 4.3) showing H-alpha + forbidden line N II and S II emission. These images are compared with new 21-cm continuum maps of the SNR with 20-arcsec resolution. Optical line intensity ratios observed in the SNR are discussed, and a model is developed for the evolution of the remnant in a three-component interstellar medium (ISM) comprising clouds interspersed with hot tunnels or cavities. The SNR is seen to be 'breaking out' from a higher density warm medium into a hotter, low density tunnel. It is argued that the unusual morphology of VRO 42.05.01 is directly attributable to the structure of the ISM in the neighborhood of the supernova explosion. In a search for an optical remnant star in the central 12 arcmin of the remnant, no object was detected brighter than B = 22.0, which was bluer than spectral type A0.
