We estimate the average mass accretion rate of all persistently accreting low-mass X-ray binaries that exhibit thermonuclear shell flashes and find that the confirmed ultracompact systems, with orbital periods shorter than 1 hr, as well as the candidate ultracompact system populate the low end of the accretion rate distribution. This is naturally explained by accretion disk theory. From this empirical method we infer further new candidate ultracompact systems.
