This work has focused on the spectroscopic study of line-strength indices in central dominant galaxies embedded in cooling flow clusters. The analysis of the D4000 and Mg2 indices have revealed that i) the central indices of galaxies in cooling flow clusters are correlated with the mass deposition rate when those galaxies exhibit emission lines; ii) those galaxies in cooling flow clusters that do not present emission lines show similar indices than galaxies in clusters without cooling flow; iii) the measured indices in galaxies with emission lines can be reproduced with relatively recent bursts of star formation; iv) the existence of correlations between radio emission, the mass deposition rates of the cooling flows, the presence of optical emission lines, and the fraction of light due to the recent bursts, leads to a scenario in which the episodic switching of a radio source (fed with gas coming from a cooling flow) triggers star formation episodes in the nuclear regions of central cluster galaxies.
