A history of noteworthy observational achievements by the IUE
astronomical spacecraft is presented, encompassing the discovery of a
companion of the supergiant star HR 8752, the LMC supernova 1987A, Comet
Halley, and active galactic nuclei. Plans are underway for probing the
planet-formation stellar system candidates RR Tauri and VV Serpentis.
