Space-based observations of violent phenomena in the universe, which started with the launch of the Giacconi's instrument package in 1962, are described. Special attention is given to Scorpius X-1, the SNR Cassiopeia A, neutron stars, quasars and other active galactic nuclei, the binary star LMC X-1, the galaxy cluster Abell 2256, and the energetic gas jets outward 5000 light-years from the nucleus of Centaurus A. Consideration is also given to the particular X-ray and gamma-ray space observatories that enabled these discoveries.
