Spectroscopic measurements on nine Wolf-Rayet stars have shown the existence of perturbated regions of motion in their stellar winds. The presence of the perturbations is signalled by numerous small variable structures superposed on the profile of the emission lines formed in the stellar wind. A study of the global variations of the lines and an examination of individual microstructures have allowed description of various characteristics of the perturbations. Among others, significant correlations are observed between the level of variability of the lines and certain stellar parameters which confirm that the phenomenon of variability is intrinsic to the stellar wind. It is also concluded that the perturbated regions have a finite extent with respect to the stellar envelope. It is proposed to represent the perturbations by a model of discrete inhomogeneities in expansion within the wind. A correlation is obtained between the number of detected inhomogeneities and the terminal velocity. It is estimated that the loss in mass due to detectable inhomogeneities corresponds to 10 percent of the mass loss of the whole wind. The structures observed in the Wolf-Rayet spectra have very similar characteristics to those of O type stars, and it is thus proposed that the perturbations observed in those two types of stars have the same origin.
