First, basic observational facts of AGNs are listed. Then the author discusses the structure of the these objects, with emphasis on the physical properties of the broad-line region and the narrow-line region and the process of photoionization. He reviews the standard model of AGN engines i.e. the black hole accretion disk model, including the most recent progress on the origin and fueling of the galactic activity.
