Evidence for the existence of magnetic fields in the Universe is reviewed along with methods for detecting such fields. The Zeeman effect is shown to provide the most widely used method for observing magnetic fields in remote objects; difficulties with this method are discussed. Other topics touched upon include the variability of solar magnetic fields, the fields in Ap stars and white dwarfs, information on the fields of neutron stars and pulsars, supernova formation rates, the nature of Ap stars, and the electrical conductivity of stellar matter. It is noted that although the magnetic fields considered are all weak by dynamic standards, the effects of them coupled with rotation, the generation of relativistic particles, and extensive magnetic fields in regions of low density are responsible for some of the most interesting phenomena in astrophysics.
