VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) is an ambitious next generation array of seven 10m atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes expected to be completed by 2005 at the Whipple Observatory in Arizona. VERITAS will surpass the sensitivity of the existing Whipple 10m telescope by a factor of 10-20 and have an energy range extending from 50 GeV to 50 TeV. A key milestone is the construction of a prototype telescope which is expected to become operational in early 2003. Part of the role of the prototype is to test the newly developed 500 MHz flash-ADC and trigger system which digitizes each of the 499 pixels in the VERITAS camera. This system provides unprecedented detail of the atmospheric Cherenkov light pulse for each event. A recent test in December 2001 of 30 pixels and electronics for a VERITAS-type camera was made using the existing 10m telescope. The results of this test and the observations of atmospheric Cherenkov pulses made with the VERITAS electronics will be described. The progress towards the full prototype telescope will be discussed.
