The balloon-borne LXeGRIT is the first prototype of a novel Compton telescope based on a high resolution 3-D imaging time projection chamber (TPC). Filled with high purity liquid Xenon, the LXeGRIT TPC has an active volume of 400 cm^2 × 7 cm, implemented with 128 electronic channels for X-Y position readout and total energy measurement and with 4 VUV PMTs for event trigger from the fast xenon scintillation light. As a calorimeter, LXeGRIT is sensitive in the energy range 0.1 - 10 MeV. For gamma-ray imaging, LXeGRIT relies on events with multiple Compton interactions, after their scattering sequence has been correctily reconstructed. Gamma-rays of energy around 1 MeV have the best imaging response. LXeGRIT results show the successful application of Compton kinematical reconstruction to suppress background. We present results on the background rate and overall performance of LXeGRIT during the Fall 2000 balloon flight from Ft. Sumner, NM.
