The flavor asymmetry observed in the sea quark distributions of the nucleon poses a strong challenge to quark model descriptions of the nucleon, as, in their simplest form, these models predict an excess of bar u quarks in the proton. While it is sufficient(and necessary for chiral symmetry) to augment the quark model description by including a meson cloud around the nucleon, the role of intrinsic(non-mesonic) sea quarks play in the flavor asymmetry remains problematic. By calculating the one gluon exchange correction to the masses of the lowest lying sea states, we examine the extent to which the flavor asymmetry can be explained in models without explicit mesonic degrees of freedom.
