In a number of physics experiments, evidence can be obtained about particles not actually detected. This is particularly true of scattering experiments and experiments in which interference patterns are produced. The most obvious relationship is that the yield depends critically upon the intensity of the incoming particles, whereas often only a few of the interacting particles are detected. This is, of course, statistical evidence. The case of interference patterns for light will be specifically discussed, in which not only the yield, but the shape of the patterns can depend upon the number of photons per unit time in the region of the detector, only a few of which are actually detected.
