The launch of high-resolution Germanium spectrometers on the Integral and HESSI missions will give us an unprecedented opportunity to study nuclear line and gamma-ray continuum emission from astrophysical sources. We examine likely scenarios for the production of energetic neutrons in X-ray binary systems as well as the prospects for detection of the narrow line at 2.22 MeV formed by neutron capture on hydrogen nuclei. We discuss how measurements of the neutron capture line and other neutron-associated continuum emission can act as powerful diagnostics of physical conditions in X-ray binary systems.
