The schematic diagram, block diagram, and functional elements of the cylindrical spin-stabilized COS-B satellite are discussed. The basic design principle was to keep all supporting subsystems as simple as possible, both to reduce the development time and costs and to meet the design reliability requirement of 85% probability of mission success for a planned one-year lifetime.
