Data from the ultraviolet spectrometer on the Mariner 9 Mars orbiter have been used to measure the strong stellar lines of Si III (1300 A), Si IV (1400 A), and C IV (1550 A). The C IV equivalent widths appear to be in good agreement with preliminary OAO-2 results; however, the Mariner 9 Si IV equivalent widths for B1 stars appear to be smaller by a factor of about 0.7. We have also made LTE calculations for the equivalent widths of these Si III and Si IV lines. Significant differences are found between various theoretical investigations which can be attributed to different models and, in particular, f-values. The observations are compared with the theoretical results. We suspect that line-blending effects make any interpretation uncertain.
