Results of calculations of the spin evolution of the accreting neutron star in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) are presented. In the period gap, the evaporation of the neutron star companion is taken into account. Three possible pathways of LMXB evolution are discussed in relation to the spin evolution of the neutron star. The spin period of the neutron star is found to be close to the local equilibrium period, which is determined by the local accretion rate and by the strength of the neutron star's magnetic field.
