The MiniBooNE experiment, motivated by the evidence for nuetrino oscillations from the LSND and atmospheric neutrino experiments, will be capable of observing both ν_μ arrow νe appearance and ν_μ disappearance. The neutrino beam will be fed by the 8 GeV proton Booster operating at a rate of 5 Hz with 5 × 10^12 ppp. The neutrino beam is designed to maximize the low energy flux below 1 GeV, which provides sensitivity to the appropriate δ m^2 and sin^2 2θ regions to study the LSND signal, and to maintain a small ratio of νe background. The primary beam will be extracted from the Booster at MI10 and transported to the BooNE Target Hall. The secondary beam consists of three sections: horn system to focus the beam, a 50m long decay region, and the beam absorber. Protons from the primary beam strike a 71cm beryllium target. Produced hadrons are focused by the magnetic fields generated from a high-current-carrying device called a "horn". The target is located within the magnetic focusing horn. Decays of secondary pions and kaons in the decay region of the Target Hall produce the neutrinos used by this experiment. At the end of the decay pipe is a beam absorber which stops all hadrons and low-energy muons. Located at 25m from the target is an intermediate absorber which can be lowered into the beam. It is introuduced to provide a test of signal versus background. The ν_μ flux at 500m is peaked at 0.94 GeV, 48 percent of the spectrum is in the optimal range, between 0.3 and 1.0 GeV. The expected νe background is 0.2 percent of the ν_μ flux.
