The concept of characteristic pairs of Type III bursts or 'f-h pairs', previously described for the metric range, is extended to other observations in various frequency ranges. It is argued that the two components of a burst pair are radiated in the same mode and from a common source. Satellite observations of Type III and electron bursts confirm that the exciter is a dispersive electron stream. Under this hypothesis, the two components of a 'harmonic' pair are both radiated at the second harmonic of the plasma frequency; the corresponding plasma waves are excited by electrons of the same stream but of different speeds. It is suggested that the first component is a brightness increase on the leading front of some Type III bursts and that it is produced by a redistribution of plasma waves occurring at a critical stage of the plasma-stream interaction.
