The velocity analysis, based on the observed CO molecular lines, commonly used for mode determination in Mira variables is criticized. An alternative analysis, based upon the observed acceleration and supported by new nonlinear calculations, is presented. The possibility that Mira variables are pulsating in the fundamental mode is positively rejected. The first overtone is suggested as the dominant mode of pulsation in these stars.
