A widely accepted hypothesis for the explanation of W-type W Ursae Majoris light curves depends on a distribution of cool starspots on the larger component, together with an approximately isothermal photosphere. This hypothesis has not heretofore been subjected to a simulation test. This paper reports a test with a total of 89 spots on the larger component. Both the theoretical V light curve and the B - V color have been compared with observational data for W Ursae Majoris. The discrepancies between theory and observation are much larger than for the alternative hot secondary model.
