A laboratory system and procedure for making coincidence measurements was developed for incorporation into the laboratory portion of physics classes at the University of Northern Colorado. The purpose of the laboratories is to introduce undergraduate students to current experimental techniques in nuclear physics, especially methods in coincidence timing. The apparatus includes two NaI detectors for detection of gamma radiation, the electronics for the coincidence timing, and a multichannel analyzer and computer for recording the data. The angular distribution of coincident gamma radiation emitted from both a sodium-22 source and a cobalt-60 source are measured and compared to the theoretical result. The possibility of expanding the apparatus to detect coincidences between a charged particle and a gamma ray will also be explored.
