The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) is a water Cerenkov detector which measures the flux and energy spectrum of electron neutrinos, the combined flux of all active flavors of neutrinos, and time variations in these quantities. These measurements require that radioactive contamination is reduced to the level of a few atoms per ton of water, and that the amount of remaining radioactivity is well understood. We discuss the techniques and results of novel radioassay and in-situ Cerenkov measurements of the radioactive background in the SNO detector.
