We present results on an approach to constructing binary black hole initial data to be used in numerical evolutions. Such data is formed by the superposition of single black-hole solutions in arbitrary coordinates. We demonstrate the ability of this superposition procedure to yield the appropriate close- and far-separation limits. That is, when the holes overlap completely, the resulting data is identical to that for a single black hole with mass parameter equal to the sum of the masses of the two contributing black holes, while in the far-separation limit, the solution near each hole is simply that of the original single black hole. We show the degree to which the superposition procedure satisfies the Einstein constraints in the intermediate regimes, and discuss how deviations can be removed using the standard York conformal procedure for solving the constraints.
