An approach to understanding the strong field effects in the late stages of the binary inspiral of two black holes is to assume periodic orbits for the holes and standing waves for the fields, and to solve the complete set of Einstein equations. The solution should give a good approximation for the spacetime structure in the case that the radiative damping time is much longer than the orbital period. Such a solution should be particularly useful as initial data for numerical relativity evolution codes. In addition, we show that this standing wave solution will give a good estimate of the outgoing radiation.
