Double pion production is sensitive to many excited states of the nucleon whose electromagnetic excitations are often poorly known.Quark models [1] also predict that some resonances, which are not observed experimentally, should appear in multipion production reactions via electromagnetic excitation. At Jefferson Lab, the reaction ep arrow epπ^+π^- has been measured in the mass region from threshold to 2.1 GeV at various momentum transfers to investigate these topics. In this contribution we will present the total and differential cross sections obtained. The CLAS data show evident resonance structures in the total cross section, a feature difficult to see in previous measurements due to the very low statistics and large binning. An analysis of the data in terms of an isobar model [2] will also be presented; it turns out that the new CLAS data around 1.7GeV invariant mass are best fitted by introducing a new excited state, whose properties are not accomodated by any of the known baryon states.
