The ratio of the prominent 3d arrow 2p transitions 3C/3D (15.0/15.2 Åin Fe XVII observed in the Sun and stellar coronae has been consistently smaller than predicted by theory. This difference has been widely interpreted as evidence of opacity (resonance scattering) effects, which tend to supress the 3C line. We have performed tokamak measurements of this ratio that reproduce the solar and astrophysical ratios without opacity. Our varied laboratory measurements (including at the Livermore electron beam ion trap) show that model calculations have invariably overpredicted this ratio in Fe XVII and the corresponding spectra of all neighboring elements and in many cases have failed to properly account for line blends. Opacity, therefore, no longer needs to be invoked to explain the coronal observations.
