We present the first results of a pilot survey for clusters of galaxies based on the detection of serendipitously detected extended X-ray sources in XMM-Newton EPIC images. The combination of large field of view, large collecting area and angular resolution makes EPIC the most sensitive instrument for this purpose. to resolve clusters of galaxies at any redshift, Follow-up optical observations of a number of cluster candidates has been obtained including imaging at the ESO 2.2meter, INT 2.5meter and VLT. Spectroscopy has been obtained of the brightest galaxy within selected cluster candidates with the Magellan-I telescope using LDSS-2 and BC. Redshifts have already been determined for 8 clusters or groups of galaxies ranging from z=0.07 to z=0.65. This project demonstrates the relative ease of creating large samples of clusters of galaxies with XMM-Newton using X-ray extent and flux alone as selection criteria. The method will be particularly valuable at high redshifts where a previously unexplored part of the (L-z) plane can be investigated.
