We present a preliminary analysis of a Chandra GTO observation of the very young stellar cluster NGC 6530, associated with the H II region M8 (the "Lagoon Nebula") at a distance of about 1800 pc. In a single 60-ksec ACIS-I observation, we detect nearly 900 X-ray point sources, most indeed expected to be cluster members, thereby selecting a rich previously unknown pre-main-sequence population of NGC 6530 and enlarging its stellar census by more than a factor of 10. We are also studying the relationships between X-ray emission and basic stellar properties, finding results similar to those from other star-forming region studies (e.g., the Orion Nebula). These new data also present a rich variety of X-ray spectra and light curves, whose analysis is expected to yield valuable information on the geometrical and thermal structure of the coronae of these stars.
