AGN are the only class of extragalactic object that have been detected at the Whipple Observatory. All of those detected are members of the blazar subclass, BL Lacertae Objects (BL Lacs). To date, four BL Lacs have been detected with the Whipple 10m telescope: Markarian 421 (z=0.031), Markarian 501 (z=0.034). 1ES2344+514 (z= 0.044) and, most recently, 1H1426+428 (z=0.129). The main properties of these four objects are summarized and their emission characteristics compared. Their spectral energy distributions are discussed in the context of blazar unification and emission models. Upper limits on the TeV emission from many more blazars have also been established using the Whipple 10m telescope; these results are summarized. Future observations of AGN with VERITAS are also discussed. With its increased sensitivity dues to its greater collection area and improved background rejection capabilities, VERITAS will not only be able to detect the well established TeV sources in unprecedented detail but will also be able to detect objects at much larger redshifts (z <= 0.3). Based on our current understanding of blazars and on our knowledge of the broadband spectral properties of many individual objects, a number of blazars are singled out as potential TeV emitters detectable by VERITAS.
